Seleucid Cataphracts

Una nueva unidad para el ejército seléucida: la temible caballería catafracta de Antíoco.

A new unit for the Seleucid army: the dreaded cataphract cavalry of Antiochus.

Cada figura consta de dos partes: el caballo (dos modelos diferentes) y el torso del jinete (tres modelos diferentes). La cantidad de posibles combinaciones es enorme, ya que el torso se puede orientar.

Each figure consists of two parts: the horse (two different models) and the torso of the rider (three different models). The number of possible combinations is enormous, because the torso can also be oriented.

Tengo miniaturas suficientes para pintar una segunda unidad, que cubrirá el otro flanco.

 I have enough miniatures to paint a second unit, which will cover the other flank.

Si tengo que buscar algún fallo en las miniaturas será el tamaño. Al igual que con los dromedarios, los catafractos son más grandes que otras referencias de Pendraken. Aquí podéis ver una foto comparándolos con los romanos.

If I have to find some problem with these miniatures it would be the size. As with dromedaries, the cataphracts are larger than other Pendraken references. Here you can see a photo comparison with the roman cavalry.

Roman army - Phase one DONE!

Por fin la primera parte de mi ejército romano está terminada!

• 2x unidades de velites
• 2x unidades de hastati
• 2x unidades de principes
• 1x unidad de triarii
• 1x unidad de caballería romana
• 1x unidad arqueros cretenses
• 1x unidad de elefantes

Para la siguiente fase, tengo que duplicar los legionarios y caballería, y añadir los aliados de Pérgamo, aunque antes quiero completar la primera parte de los seléucidas.

Pero de momento, a disfrutarlos!

At last, the first part of my Roman army is finished!

• 2x velite units
• 2x hastati units
• 2x principes units
• 1x unit triarii
• 1x roman cavalry unit
• 1x Cretan archers unit
• 1x elephants unit

For the next phase, I have to duplicate the legionaries and cavalry, and add Pergame allies, but first I want to complete the first part of the Seleucids.

But for the moment, just enjoy them!

Aunque son figuras de mahdistas, las usaré como árabes en mi ejército seléucida (he cortado algunas lanzas para que parezcan arcos). Sí, ya sé que es una unidad poco importante, pero me hacía mucha ilusión pintar los dromedarios...

Although these are mahdists figures, I will use them as arabs in my Seleucid army (I cut some spears to look like bows). Yes, I know it is a minor unit, but I really wanted to paint the dromedaries...

Elephant

Este elefante, sin torre ni combatientes, representará al pequeño grupo de elefantes presente en el ejército romano durante la batalla de Magnesia. Se quedaron en retaguardia, porque se habrían asustado al enfrentarse a los elefantes seléucidas, de mayor tamaño.

This elephant, without tower nor fighters, shall represent the small group of elephants present in the roman army at the battle of Magnesia. They deployed behind the lines, because they would have scared to face the larger seleucid elephants.

Me encanta la figura por lo sencilla que es. Igual pinto otro más.

Roman cavalry

Unidad de caballería romana. Estas figuras de Pendraken son absolutamente geniales, ha sido una gozada pintarlas, tienen el detalle perfecto.

Roman cavalry unit. These Pendraken figures are absolutely great, it has been a joy to paint them, they have the perfect detail.

Pintaré otra unidad (debería haberlo hecho a la vez) para cubrir el otro ala.

Triarii

Este verano también he podido pintar una unidad más para el proyecto de Magnesia: una unidad de triarii.

This summer I've been able to paint a unit for Magnesia project: a triarii unit.

Recordad que estas miniaturas han sido transformadas. La disposición en la peana es más regular que en las otras unidades de princeps y hastati, y he incluido tres figuras más.

 Remember that these miniatures have been modified. The display on the base is more regular than on the other units of hastati and princeps, and I have also included three figures more.

Para completar "una legión" tengo que pintar un par de unidades más (hastati y principes) y la caballería. ¡Aunque lento, el proyecto va avanzando!

Seleucid asiatic skirmishers with bow

Las figuras son arqueros persas de Minifigs. ¿Alguien sabe si esta empesa sigue existiendo? Tengo unas cuantas referencias y son muy buenas, aunque un poco grandes comparadas con Pendraken. Perdonad la mala calidad de las fotos.

Figures are Minifigs persian archers. Does anyone know if this manufacterer still exists? I have a few references and are very good, although a bit large compared to Pendraken. Sorry for the bad pics.

 

 

 

Esta unidad representa a uno de los muchos tipos de unidades de hostigadores que puede desplegar el ejército seléucida.

This unit represents one of many types of skirmishers that seleucids can deploy.

 

Seleucid phalanx

Primera unidad de piqueros seléucidas. He repintado un poco las figuras y he cambiado las picas, que eran alfileres, por otras de Xyston.

First seleucid pikemen unit. I´ve  repainted some figures and changed the pikes, which were pins, by others made by Xyston.

 

En realidad esta unidad (38 figuras en total) representa dos unidades, una detrás de otra, pero he decidido colocarlas en una misma base de 60x60mm. En Magnesia las unidades de piqueros desplegaron con formaciones inusualmente profundas de 32 filas. Comparadas con las tres filas de los hastati romanos, la visión debió ser espectacular.

Actually this unit (38 figures in total) represents two units, one after another, but I decided to place them in a single 60x60mm base. At Magnesia, pikemen units deployed with unusually deep formations of 32 rows. Compared with the three rows of roman hastati, the vision must have been spectacular.

Las figuras son de Old Glory: piqueros macedonios. Tienen más o menos el mismo tamaño que las figuras de Pendraken. En realidad son un poco más pequeñas, pero la base es más gruesa así que lo compensa. Después de haber pintado unos piqueros de Pendraken para la conversión de los elefantes tengo que decir que la calidad es mejor que la de Old Glory, pero los de Old Glory tienen la ventaja (al menos para mí) de venir en una tira. Para una formación tan cerrada como los piqueros es mucho más cómodo este formato.

These are Old Glory figures: macedonian pikemen. They are about the same size as Pendraken figures. Actually, they are a little smaller, but the base is thicker so it compensates it. Having painted some Pendraken pikemen for the elephants conversion, I have to say that the quality is better than Old Glory, but Old Glory figures have the advantage (at least for me) to come in a strip. For close formation units as pikemen is much more comfortable this format, I think.

Últimamente se han visto en otros blogs impresionantes unidades de piqueros para proyectos de Magnesia o Raphia, así que ahí va mi "pequeña" contribución a esta fiebre seléucida.

Principes

Segunda unidad de legionarios, principes.

Second unit of legionaries, principes.

Debido al escudo, que cubre prácticamente a toda la figura, es muy difícil diferenciar esta unidad de los hastati, ya que la cota de malla sólo se aprecia si se ve desde atrás. Con el resto de legiones cambiaré las plumas del casco de los principes para que sea más fáciles de reconocer.

Due to the shield, that covers almost the entire figure, is very difficult to distinguish this unit from hastati one as chain mail is only noticeable if viewed from behind. With the rest of legions I´ll change proncipes helmet feathers to make their unit easier to recognize.

Los he pintado un poco rápido y no he prestado la atención que debía a algunos detalles, pero lo que busco es avanzar con el proyecto así que mientras el aspecto general de la unidad sea bueno me conformo.

I've painted them quite fast and I have not paid attention due to some details, but what I want is to move forward with the project so while the overall look of the unit is good, I'm ok.
 

Y ahora a por los triarii. Estos sí que van a necesitar algunas conversiones.
