Assembling Xyston Trireme (part II - sails)

Ver parte I: montaje básico con marineros y hoplitas.
----------
See part I:
basic assemble with marines and hoplites.

------------
If we decide to use sails, first of all we have to enlarge with a drill the holes of the hull, as they are too small.

------------
If we want to include cordage, the best option is tying knots to the masts, but in order to hold them to the hull or deck we will need to make some holes with the drill.

------------
Masts supplied in the blister are very soft and bend easily. It is best to replace them with something more rigid with similar thickness (in the photo, what I've used).

------------
Once we have everything ready, we must decide whether we will use the sails furled (historically correct) or unfolded (visually stunning). This trireme will represent an ancient ship, with only the main mast, and I´ll use the sail unfold.

------------
A couple of details, once the sail is attached to the mast: drill the bottom corner in order to pass the cordage, and trim a little the sail on the top corner so you can tie it more easily.

-------------
I´ve used nylon as cordage. It has the advantage of being easy to paint but the disadvantage of not being very flexible. Start gluing all cordages into in the holes drilled on the structure and deck.

------------
It is better to use long pieces of nylon and then cut the excess. Once glued all, the ship will look very curious... (I know, is not the same ship).

-------------
Tie the cordage to the masts. Try not to stretch it too much, or you could bend the mast.

------------
Once the knot (a simple one) is tight, add a little drop of glue on the top and, once dry, cut off the excess.

-----------
Pass the nylon through the drilled hole of the sail and add glue while keeping the nylon taut.

------------
The glue will fill the hole pretty well, so once dry we just need to remove excess from the front with a sharp cutter. If needed, fill the hole with putty.

------------
Use some putty to plug/fill in the gaps left by the glue.

Y este es el resultado final / And this is the final result:

------------
And this is another example (more complex), but following the same steps.

Y ahora a pintarlos. Próximamente, la parte III: pintado.
------------
Let´s paint them. Coming soon, part III: painting.

Nos vemos!

  1. Sencillamente...Im-presionante!
