Roman army - Phase one DONE!

Por fin la primera parte de mi ejército romano está terminada!

Para la siguiente fase, tengo que duplicar los legionarios y caballería, y añadir los aliados de Pérgamo, aunque antes quiero completar la primera parte de los seléucidas.

Pero de momento, a disfrutarlos!

At last, the first part of my Roman army is finished!

Elephant

Este elefante, sin torre ni combatientes, representará al pequeño grupo de elefantes presente en el ejército romano durante la batalla de Magnesia. Se quedaron en retaguardia, porque se habrían asustado al enfrentarse a los elefantes seléucidas, de mayor tamaño.

This elephant, without tower nor fighters, shall represent the small group of elephants present in the roman army at the battle of Magnesia. They deployed behind the lines, because they would have scared to face the larger seleucid elephants.

Me encanta la figura por lo sencilla que es. Igual pinto otro más.

Roman cavalry

Unidad de caballería romana. Estas figuras de Pendraken son absolutamente geniales, ha sido una gozada pintarlas, tienen el detalle perfecto.

Triarii

Este verano también he podido pintar una unidad más para el proyecto de Magnesia: una unidad de triarii.

This summer I've been able to paint a unit for Magnesia project: a triarii unit.

Recordad que estas miniaturas han sido transformadas. La disposición en la peana es más regular que en las otras unidades de princeps y hastati, y he incluido tres figuras más.

Principes

Segunda unidad de legionarios, principes.

Debido al escudo, que cubre prácticamente a toda la figura, es muy difícil diferenciar esta unidad de los hastati, ya que la cota de malla sólo se aprecia si se ve desde atrás. Con el resto de legiones cambiaré las plumas del casco de los principes para que sea más fáciles de reconocer.

Due to the shield, that covers almost the entire figure, is very difficult to distinguish this unit from hastati one as chain mail is only noticeable if viewed from behind. With the rest of legions I´ll change proncipes helmet feathers to make their unit easier to recognize.

Los he pintado un poco rápido y no he prestado la atención que debía a algunos detalles, pero lo que busco es avanzar con el proyecto así que mientras el aspecto general de la unidad sea bueno me conformo.

I've painted them quite fast and I have not paid attention due to some details, but what I want is to move forward with the project so while the overall look of the unit is good, I'm ok.

Cretan Archers

Dos nuevas unidades. ¡Me encanta pintar hostigadores... es tan rápido!

Los arqueros cretenses eran mercenarios, así que una de estas unidades servirá en el ejército romano y la otra en el seléucida. Efectivamente, en la batalla de Magnesia ambos ejércitos desplegaron unidades de arqueros cretenses.

Cretan archers were mercenaries, so one of these units will fight for the roman army and the other for seleucid army. That´s it, at Magnesia both armies deployed cretan archers units.

El color blanco me ha dado bastante dolor de cabeza, sobre todo en los escudos, hasta que he conseguido el aspecto que quería (bueno, casi!).

The white color caused me some head scratching, especially with the shields, until I got the look I wanted (well, almost).

He usado 18 figuras: 15 legionarios + 3 de grupo de mando. No he querido colocarlos en una formación demasiado ordenada, haciendo caso a las teorías de Lendon o Quesada, que apuestan por una formación menos rígida (excepto los triarios).

I´ve used 18 figures: 15 legionnaires + 3 figures of command. I didn´t want to display them in a too tidy formation, attending to Lendon or Quesada theories, who bet for a less rigid formation (except on triarii).

Puede parecer que la peana (60x40mm) es demasiado grande, pero así cuando coloque todas las bases juntas se distinguirán bien las unidades y creará el efecto "tablero de ajedrez" característico de los ejércitos romanos.

It may look that the base (60x40mm) would be too large, but when you put together all the bases, units will be perfectly distinguished and also will create the effect of "chess board" so characteristic of the Roman armies.

Velites

Ya he terminado las dos primeras bases para el proyecto de Magnesia: dos unidades de vélites.

I've finished the first two bases for Magnesia project: two velites units.

Aunque el color blanco me resulta difícil de pintar, es un color que siempre me ha gustado para una legión republicana, especialmente desde que vi una ilustración en un libro de Osprey. En Magnesia participaron cuatro legiones, dos consulares y dos de aliados. Yo pintaré las legiones consulares en blanco y las aliadas en... probablemente rojo.

Although white a difficult to paint for me, is a color that I've always liked for a republican legion, especially since I saw a picture in an Osprey´s book. Four took legions took part at Magnesia, two consular and two allied. I´ll paint the consular legions in white and the allied ones... probably in red.

Esta vez le he dedicado un poco más de tiempo a la base, ya que son hostigadores y se va a ver mucho suelo.

Magnesia 10mm (english)

Painting the scythed chariots and elephants for Pendraken Painting Competition has renewed my interest in this army/project that has been a forgotten for a while. The question is, why?

I think it is because I have no clear objective. Initially the goal was to play Impetus, but lack of opponents and time to play has relegated it to a second/third plane. So I´ve decided to restart the project and organize myself to know what I have to paint. Like any good wargamers know, you always need to have two armies in order to face among themselves. So, as my seleucid oponent I´ve chosen a Roman Republican Army (thanks Pendraken Award!). Let´s  define the project.

First: Choose the topic.
I want to focus on the battle of Magnesia. It is a very colorful battle where the Seleucid army displays virtually all kind of available troops (phalangites, cataphracts, elephants, scythed chariots, camels ...) and even the Romans have an ally (Pergamon) that gives some variety to the army.

With this battle in mind, I will choose the troops that I have to paint.

Second: Decide size of the bases.
I have one thing clear: each unit will have a single base. Some of the figures that I have already painted are based on a base with 8cm front (ie for Impetus 15mm). It would be perfect, because it is a base size that gives very good sense of mass. However, on second thoughts I've noticed that I´ve chosen armies with a lot of heavy infantry, which involves buying and painting many miniatures. Money and time are not two things of wich I have plenty now, so I think it will be a good idea making the bases with 6cm front. It is a good base size to give mass effect (4cm would be too small), but it will not require so many figures.

Third: Which game system to use?
Requirements: simple, fast, faithfully representing ancient warfare (well, you understand me) and with rules for (or easily adaptable to) solo playing.

Looking much I think I found a little gem, so I decided on Armati. I liked it because:

1. It's simple. Although the rulebook is quite extensive, the rules are very easy.
2. It's pretty fast. In an hour or an hour and a half the battle is done (at least in my tests).
3. It's historic. That is, deployment is the key (a unit can not flown all over the table in a couple of command phases) and rules favor the units behave as they did historically (supposedly...).
4. It is relatively simple to represent a historic battle playing solo.

However, I can also use rules as Rally Round the King, Hail Caesar or Impetus to face armies if given the situation (as both have the same front size,there´s no problem).

Fourth: Troops.
I have decided to start with an achievable goal, but can add more pikemen, auxiliaries, legionaries, etc. later.

Seleucids (117 pts): 5x PH, WB 1x, 2x LI, SI 4x, 2x CAT, 1x HC, CM 1x, 2x LC, 2x, 2x Scyth
A total of 22 units including:

• Pikemen and Argyraspids (PH). I have already painted most of them, just need to change the base.
• Galatians (WB). I'll have to buy them, is the only unit that I don´t have.
• Auxiliary infantry (LI). Cappadocians and other races. I have many greek style peltasts painted, but also have to paint some Cappadocians.
• Skirmishers (SI). Cretans, Tralles, Cilicians, etc. armed with bows, slings and javelins. I have enough already painted.
• Cataphracts (CAT). I´ve also added a HC unit to represent Hetairoi, less armored.
• Arabs on camels (CM). Only 300 participated in the battle, but it´s a "Must be" in the army unit.
• Dahae horse archers and Tarentines (LC). They are half-painted.
• And of course: elephants (EL) and scythed chariots (Scyth).

I could add more units: pikemen, Galatians (foot and horse), auxiliary and even elephants. But, lets try to paint something first...

Romans/Pergamon (77 pts): 6x FT, LI 2x, 6x SI, HC 3x, 1x
18 units in total, including:

• Two Hastati units, two princeps units and two triarii units (FT). There should be more units (double of princeps and hastati), because there were four legions, but I prefer to have an achievable goal. I can get more romans once these are painted.
• Velites (four SI units) in front of the legions.
• Roman and Pergamon Cavalry (HC), concentrated in the right wing.
• Pergamon auxiliary infantry, probably theurophoroi peltasts (LI).
• Cretan archers and Tralles slingers (two SI units).
• African Elephants (EL). There where 16 at Magnesia, but remained in reserve because they had no chance against Indian elephants.

So, once again I have embarked on a new project! Hope you like the idea, and hope to have time to paint some units soon...

Tras pintar el carro falcado y los elefantes para el concurso de pintura de Pendraken me vuelve a picar el gusanillo por este ejército/proyecto que lleva un tiempo olvidado. La cuestión es, ¿por qué?

Creo que se debe a que no tengo un objetivo claro. Al principio el objetivo era jugar a Impetus, pero la falta de oponentes y tiempo para jugar lo relegaron a un segundo/tercer plano. Así que he decidido retomar el proyecto y organizarme para saber lo que tengo que ir pintando poco a poco. Como todo buen wargames sabe, siempre hay que tener dos ejércitos para poder enfrentarlos, así que para enfrentarse a mis seléucidas he decidido hacer un ejército romano republicano (gracias al premio de Pendraken!). Y ahora, a definir el proyecto.

Primero: Elegir el tema.
He decidido centrarme en la batalla de Magnesia. Es una batalla muy variopinta, donde el ejérctio seléucida despliega prácticamente todos los tipos de tropas disponibles (falanges, catafractos, elefantes, carros falcados, dromedarios...) e incluso los romanos tienen un aliado (Pérgamo) que le da algo de variedad al ejército.

Con esta batalla en mente, elegiré las tropas que tengo que pintar.

Segundo: Decidir el tamaño de las bases.
Hay una cosa que tengo clara: cada unidad tendrá una única peana. Algunas de las figuras que tengo pintadas estás basadas en peanas de 8cm de frente (es decir, para Impetus 15mm). En principio sería perfecto, por que es un tamaño de base que da muy buena sensación de masa. Sin embargo, siendo realistas me he dado cuenta de que los ejércitos elegidos tienen mucha infantería pesada, lo que implica comprar y pintar muchas miniaturas. Dinero y tiempo son dos cosas que no me sobran actualmente, así que he pensado hacer las bases con 6cm de frente. Todavía es un buen tamaño de base para dar efecto masa (4cm sería demasiado pequeño), pero no serán necesarias tantas figuras.

Mis antiguos piqueros. Con ese tamaño de unidad no acabaría nunca...

Tercero: ¿Qué sistema de juego utilizar?
Requisitos: sencillo, rápido, que represente fielmente (bueno, ya me entendéis) la guerra en la antiguedad y que permita o sea fácilmente adaptable a partidas en solitario.

Buscando mucho creo que he encontrado una pequeña joya, así que me he decidido por Armati. Me ha gustado porque:

1. Es muy sencillo. Aunque el reglamento es bastante extenso, las reglas son muy sencillas. 
2. Es bastante rápido. En una hora u hora y media se resulve una partida (al menos con mis pruebas).
3. Es histórico. Es decir, el despliegue es clave (una unidad no puede recorrerse toda la mesa en un par de fases de mando) y las reglas favorecen que las unidades se comporten como lo hacían históricamente (supuestamente...).
4. Es relativamente sencillo representar una batalla histórica jugando en solitario.

Sin embargo, también podré usar reglas como Rally Round the King, Impetus o Hail Caesar para enfrentar los ejércitos si se da la situación (y como ambos tendrán el mismo frente, no habrá problema).

Cuarto: Las tropas.
Para empezar he decidido ponerme un objetivo asequible, no sea que me desmoralice antes de empezar, aunque más adelante pueda añadir más piqueros, auxiliares, legionarios, etc.

Seléucidas (117 pts): 5x PH, 1x WB, 2x LI, 4x SI, 2x CAT, 1x HC, 1x CM, 2x LC, 2x El, 2x Scyth
Un total de 22 unidades que incluyen:

• Piqueros y argiráspides (PH). Tengo la mayor parte pintados, sólo hay que cambiar la base.
• Gálatas (WB). Tendré que comprarlos, es la única unidad que no tengo.
• Auxiliares capadocios y de diversas razas (LI). Tengo muchos peltastas de estilo griego, pero tendré que pintar también algunos capadocios.
• Hostigadores cretenses, tralios, cilicios, etc. armados con arcos, hondas y javalinas (SI). Tengo bastantes ya pintados.
• Catafractos (CAT). También he añadico una unidad de HC, que representará a los Hetairoi,menos acorazados
• Árabes en dromedarios (CM). Sólo participaron 300, pero aunque eran muy pocos es una unidad muy bonita como para no ponerla.
• Arqueros a caballo y tarentinos (LC). Están a medio pintar.
• Y por supuesto: elefantes (EL) y carros falcados (Scyth).

Se podrían añadir más unidades de piqueros, galatas (a pie y a caballo), auxiliares e incluso elefantes. Pero vamos poco a poco...


Romanos/Pérgamo (77 pts): 6x FT, 2x LI, 6x SI, 3x HC, 1x EL
18 unidades en total que incluyen:

• Dos unidades de hastati, dos de princeps y dos de triarii (FT). Deberían ser más (el doble de princeps y hastati), porque participaron cuatro legiones, pero prefiero ponerme objetivos asequibles. Ya conseguiré más cuando termine de pintarlos.
• Velites (cuatro unidades de SI) en frente de las legiones.
• Caballería romana y de pérgamo (HC), concentrada en el ala derecha.
• Auxiliares de pérgamo, probablemente peltastas theurophoroi (LI).
• Arqueros cretenses y honderos tralios (dos unidades más de SI).
• Elefantes africanos (EL). El la batalla hubo 16, aunque se quedaron en reserva porque no hubiesen sido efectivos contra los elefantes indios.

Pues nada, ya estamos embarcados en un nuevo proyecto! Espero que os guste la idea y poder ir pintando unidades poco a poco...

El segundo de la primera fila es una conversión de un velite. Con el resto sólo he girado algunas cabezas y añadido un modelo con cota de malla por peana para dar algo de variedad.

The second one of the first row is a conversion of a velite model. With the rest I just turned some heads and added a model with a mail coat per base to give some variety.

Princeps (3x 4Bd) Essex RO2, RO16, RO18 y RO8

El escudo de RO16 es más pequeño, pero no se nota demasiado.

He cambiado la lanza por una aguja.

El estandarte y el comandante son una conversión. Creo que el comandante es RO19, cambiando la cabeza y añadiendo una espada.

Dos triari y un velite. Creo que la tienda es de Baueda y la empalizada está hecha con palitos de brocheta.
