Segunda tanda de miniaturas prehistóricas!


LOBOS / WOLVES
Los lobos son unos animales fundamentales, ya que pueden jugar el papel de depredadores y enfrentarse a los cavernícolas, o ser usados como "perros" y ayudarles en las labores de caza. Hay muchas marcas que fabriquen lobos en 28mm, Otherworld Miniatures tiene unos que me gustan mucho, pero una vez más he optado por la gran relación calidad/precio de Reaper y he comprado su blister Wolf Pack, que incluye tres figuras fantásticas.

Wolves are a must buy miniatures because they can play the role of predators and deal with the cavemen, or be used as "dogs" and help in the hunting. There are many manufacturers that made wolves in 28mm, Otherworld Miniatures is one that I like, but again I opted for the great quality/price of Reaper and I bought their Wolf Pack bliste , which includes three fantastic figures.

MAMUT / MAMMOTH
Otra miniatura fundamental (en un juego sobre caza de mamuts). En esta ocasión la miniatura es uno de los modelos de DeeZee Miniatures, una espectacular figura en resina (con muy poquitos fallos) y cola y colmillos de metal. Lamentablemente, rompí uno de los colmillos al darle forma (se ve en la foto) y poco después conseguí arreglármelas para partir el otro... Afortunadamente he podido hacer un par de colmillos nuevos con masilla verde y un clip.

Another key miniature (in a game about of mammoth hunting). This time the miniature is one of the models of DeeZee Miniatures, a spectacular figure in resin (with very few failures) and tail and metal tusks. Unfortunately, I broke one of the tusks trying to bend it (shown in photo) and later I managed to break the other one... Fortunately I have made a couple of new teeth with green stuff and a clip.

ELASMOTHERIUM
Uno de mis mamíferos prehistóricos favoritos. Aunque al final quedé bastante contento con el rinoceronte lanudo de Reaper, no me he podido resistir a este modelo de DeeZee que es tan espectacular como pesado (está hecho de metal macizo). Tengo pensada una pequeña conversión para mejorarlo un poquito más... ya os la enseñaré    :-)

One of my favorite prehistoric mammals. Although at the end I was quite happy with Reaper´s woolly rhinoceros, I couldn´t resist to this DeeZee model that is as spectacular as heavy (made of solid metal). I have designed a small conversion to improve it a little more ... I´ll show it to you soon   :-)

CABALLOS / HORSES
Estas cebras de North Star harán el papel de caballos prehistóricos. Van a necesitar algo de trabajo y conversión, ya que las cinco son todas iguales...

These North Star zebras will play the role of prehistoric horses. They will need some work and conversion, as the all five are the same model...

PERSONAJES CAVERNÍCOLAS / CAVEMEN CHARACTERS
Y por último, el depredador más peligroso de todos... el hombre. Amplío la colección con el pack de personajes de Copplestone.

I´m back! (again...)

Lo siento, pero el ordenador se estropeó (por última vez...) justo al día siguiente depués de la última entrada. Ya tengo ordenador nuevo, así que iré poniéndome al día con todas las entradas que tengo pendientes... De momento, un aperitivo de Impetus Navalis.

I´m sorry, but the computer crashed down (for it last time ...) the very next day after the last entry. Now I have a new computer, so I'll be catching up with all the entries that I have outstanding ... For now, a pick of Impetus Navalis.

WIP - predators and scenery (close for holidays)

Tranquilos, no he vuelto a desconectar, pero me he puesto a trabajar en varias cosas a la vez y tengo muchas cosas a medias o a punto de terminar. Os dejo algunas fotos para poneros los dientes largos.

Relax, I have not disconnect (yet), but I have started to work on several things at once and I have many things halfway or almost done. Here are some photos to begin with.

Lobos de Reaper. Se pueden usar como depredadores o como "perros" que ayudan a los cavernícolas. Son unas figuras muy bonitas, aunque uno venía con un defecto en la boca.

Reaper wolves. Can be used as predators or as "dogs" that help the cavemen. The figures are very nice, although one came with a defect in the mouth.

Conversión de león cavernario: el original lo podéis ver aquí. Le he quitado los dientes y añadido cola. La figura sigue sin ser gran cosa... creo que además va a ser chunga de pintar.

Cave lion conversion: the original can be seen here. I have removed the teeth and added a tail. I still don´t like the fiure too much... It also look like is going to be hard to paint.

Bases de escenografía. Les pondré hierba alta para dar algo de cobertura a mis cazadores y variedad al tablero de juego.

Scenery bases. I will put tall grass on them to give some coverage to my hunters and variety to the game board.

También estoy trabajando en mujeres cavernícolas y marcadores de tierra quemada y fuego. Los lobos y los marcadores de tierra quemada están terminados, las mujeres y la escenografia casi. "Lamentablemente", mañana me marcho de vacaciones y estaré desconectado hasta el 17. Así que estad atentos a las novedades a la vuelta!

I´m also working on cavewomen and fire and burned earth markers. Wolves and burned earth markers are finished, women and the scenery almost. "Unfortunately," tomorrow I go on vacation and I'll be offline until 17. So stay tuned for updates till then!

Coelodonta antiquitatis

Otra figura más de Reaper. Aunque en un principio no me entusiasmaba demasiado, he de reconocer que pintada ha mejorado mucho (aún así me sigue pareciendo un poco pequeña).

El rinoceronte lanudo (Coelodonta antiquitatis) es un enorme rinoceronte (con 4 m de largo y casi 2 de alto) de pelo espeso que habitó las frías estepas de Eurasia (aunque llegó a extenderse hasta el centro de España y el sur de Inglaterra) durante el Pleistoceno.

Another Reaper figure. Although at first I wasn´t very excited with the figure, I must admit that painting has improved it a lot (yet it still looks a bit small).

The woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) is a huge rhinoceros (4 m long and nearly 2 meters high) with thick hair who lived in the cold steppes of Eurasia during the Pleistocene(although it extended to the center of Spain and southern England).

Al contrario que otros rinocerontes, los cuernos del rinoceronte lanudo eran aplanados, pudiendo alcanzar fácilmente un metro de longitud. Gracias al hallazgo de un ejemplar de hembra completo (incluyendo carne, pelo y cuernos) se conoce incluso el color del pelaje en vida, que era pardo oscuro con una banda negra a lo largo del dorso.

Su extinción probablemente se deba a causas climáticas, ya que se trata de un animal demasiado peligroso como para ser cazado por los neandertales.

Unlike other rhinos, woolly rhinoceros horns were flat and can easily reach one meter in length. Thanks to the finding of a complete female (including meat, hair and horns), we known even the fur color in life, which was dark brown with a black band along the back.

Its extinction was probably due to climatic reasons, because this animal was too dangerous to be hunted by neanderthals.

Arctodus simus / Ursus spelaeus

Esta fantástica figura de Reaper, dado que no es históricamente correcta, puede representar a cualquiera de los osos presentes durante la Edad de Hielo: el archiconocido oso de las cavernas (Ursus spelaelus) y el no tan conocido, pero aún de mayor tamaño, el oso de hocico corto (Arctodus simus).

This fantastic Reaper miniature could represent any of the bears present during the Ice Age, as it´s not historically accurate: the well-known cave bear (Ursus spelaelus) and the not so known, but even larger, the short-faced bear (Arctodus simus).

 El oso de las cavernas podía alcanzar casi los 3 m erguido y superar los 600 kg de peso, siendo muy similar en tamaño a los actuales osos kodyak o a los osos polares. Habitaba los bosques de europa, donde debía competir con otros predadores (leones cavernarios y neandertales) por las cuevas que usaban como refugio para pasar el invierno. A pesar de ser omnívoro, los restos hallados evidencian que su dieta era fundamentalmente herbívora.

The cave bear could reach almost 3 m tall and over 600 kg, being very similar in size to the current kodyak or polar bears. Inhabited the forests of Europe, where they had to compete with other predators (cave lions and neanderthals) for the caves they used as shelter during the winter. Despite being an omnivore, remains found evidence that their diet was mainly herbivorous.

El oso de hocico corto fue el mayor carnívoro terrestre de su tiempo, alcanzando los 3,5 m de altura ergido y 750 kg de peso. Nativo de américa del norte, al contrario que el oso cavernario, frecuentaba las llanuras y su dieta se basaba en la carne. Algunas teorías afirman que fue un depredador activo, mientras que otras lo consideran un cleptoparásito que aprovechaba su fuerza y tamaño para robar las presas a otros depredadores más pequeños que el (smilodon, león cavernario, etc.).

The short-faced bear was the largest terrestrial carnivore of its time, reaching 3.5 m in height erected and up to 750 kg in weight. Native of North America, unlike the cave bear, frequented the plains and his diet was mostly based on meat. Some theories say he was an active predator, while others consider it a kleptoparasite that used his strength and size advantage to steal preys from other predators smaller than he (smilodon, cave lion, etc.).

Prehistoric beasts (part 1)

Pintar animales es uno de mis temas favoritos, no sé por qué... quizás porque el resultado tiene que ser natural y realista, o simplemente que, desde pequeño, siempre me han gustado los animales.

Con el proyecto de los cavernícolas apenas iniciado empecé a pensar en todas las figuras de animales prehistóricos que necesitaba me gustaría comprar, pero la cosa no está para gastos y además resulta que ya tenía un montón de figuras aún por pintar (reciclar proyectos, bien!).Os dejo unas fotos comparando las miniaturas con los cavernícolas de Copplestone.

Painting animals is one of my favorites, I do not know why ... perhaps because the result has to be natural and realistic or just that, since childhood, I've always loved animals.

 

With the cavemen project just initiated, I started thinking about all the figures of prehistoric animals that I needed wish to buy, but it´s not a good time to spending and it turns out that I had a lot of figures still unpainted (recycled projects, fine!). Here you have some pics comparing the models with Copplestone cavemen.

OSO / BEAR
Creo que todos coincidiremos en que era indispensable incorporar un oso cavernario al proyecto. Esta figura de "Dire bear" de Reaper quizás sea demasiado grande, pero tiene una ferocidaz indiscutible.

I think everyone will agree with me that it was essential to incorporate a cave bear to the project. This Reaper "Dire bear" figure may be too big, but has an undeniable ferocity.

RINOCERONTE / RHINO
Otra figura de Reaper, "Nhoolyan", que usaré como rinoceronte lanudo. No me entusiasma demasiado, pero veremos cómo queda una vez pintada.

Another Reaper figure, "Nhoolyan", I'll use as woolly rhinoceros. I don´t get too excited with it , but let´s see how it looks once painted.

GRANDES FELINOS / BIG CATS
En esta ocasión tenemos dos marcas diferentes de smilodon. El "Sabertooth" de Reaper (izquierda) me parece una figura muy correcta, quizás un poco grande, pero seguro que es muy agradable de pintar. Las otras dos son de Pulp Figures y son... feas (además de incompatibles con la de Reaper). Estas dos figuras de Pulp Figures probablemente acaben convertidas en leones cavernarios. El problema es que el smilodon era (probablemente) un animal gregario, de manera que necesito más figuras, y el otro modelo de Reaper no es compatible porque es muy grande (y también muy feo). Tendré que buscar otra figura o conseguir otro "Sabertooth" y realizar alguna conversión para tener modelos distintos...

This time we have two different manufacturers for the smilodon. Reaper´s "Sabertooth" (left) seems a very accurate figure, perhaps a little big, but it sure is nice to paint. The other two are from Pulp Figures and they are ... ugly (besides incompatible with Reaper). These two Pulp Figures models are liable to end converted into cave lions. The problem is that the smilodons were (probably) gregarious animals, so I need more figures, and the other Reaper model is not compatible and too big (and also very ugly). I have to find another model or get another "Sabertooth" an convert it in order to have different models...

PÁJAROS TERRORÍFICOS / TERROR BIRDS
Una vez más Reaper nos provee de una excelente figura de pájaro gigante: "Axebeak", de la cual tengo dos modelos  :-)

Again, Reaper provides us with an excellent figure of giant bird: "Axebeak", of which I have two models :-)

COCODRILOS / CROCODILES
Tengo un par de figuras de "Dire Crocodile" (1 y 2) de Reaper que pueden pasar perfectamente como cocodrilos prehistóricos y dar un buen susto a mis cavernícolas si se acercan demasiado a un río...

I have a couple of Reaper "Dire Crocodile" (1 & 2) figures that can count as prehistoric crocodiles and give a nice shock to my cavemen if they get too close to a river...

Como veréis, la mayor parte de mis figuras son de Reaper y esto es así por dos motivos: precio asequible y fáciles de encontrar en tiendas. Exister otras marcas interesantes que fabrican animales prehistóricos. Mi favorita es Acheson Creations, pero sus elevados gastos de envío a España (50% del total) la hacen tristemente inviable. Mi segunda opción es North Star Miniatures, con la que espero escribir pronto la segunda parte de esta entrada.  ;-)

As you can see, most of my figures are Reaper models, and this is so for two reasons: affordable price and easy to find in stores (even here in Spain). There are other interesting manufacturers that make prehistoric animals. My favorite is Acheson Creations, but their high shipping costs to Spain (50% of total) make it sadly impossible to afford. My second choice is North Star Miniatures, with which I hope to write soon the second part of this post.   ;-)
