Testing Oyumaru

Recientemente he adquirido unas barritas de oyumaru (o instant mold), ya que tras ver este tutorial me ha parecido una forma muy sencilla de clonar piezas de miniaturas.

I recently acquired some oyumaru bars (or instant mold), cause after seeing this tutorial I think it could be an easy way to clone miniature pieces.

Este material se vuelve totalmente maleable si se calienta en agua a unos 80º C.
Colocando la pieza (esqueletos de Warmaster en la foto) entre dos trozos y presionando durante unos minutos se fabrica el molde.

Después se rellena el molde de masilla. Creo que es la parte más complicada, es difícil acertar con la cantidad.

Y este es el resultado. Se puede mejorar, pero para ser el primer intento no está mal. La masilla se ha roto en las lanzas, por ser demasiado finas, pero creo que el detalle que se consigue es bastante bueno, teniendo en cuenta que son 10mm! Debajo hay otro intento, una cabeza de alien en 28mm.

And this is the result. It can be improved, but not bad being the first attempt. The putty has broken at spears, as they are too thin, but I think the detail you get is pretty good, considering they are 10mm! Below is another attempt, an alien head at 28mm.

No está nada mal el invento, creo que es muy útil para clonar pequeñas piezas pero no creo que sirva a gran escala. Realmente lo difícil es acertar con la cantidad de masilla, espero pillarle el truco pronto.

Not bad the invention, I think is very useful for cloning small pieces but do not think that serves at large scale. The really difficult thing is to ascertain the amount of putty, hope I´ll soon get the hang of it.

El segundo de la primera fila es una conversión de un velite. Con el resto sólo he girado algunas cabezas y añadido un modelo con cota de malla por peana para dar algo de variedad.

The second one of the first row is a conversion of a velite model. With the rest I just turned some heads and added a model with a mail coat per base to give some variety.

Princeps (3x 4Bd) Essex RO2, RO16, RO18 y RO8

El escudo de RO16 es más pequeño, pero no se nota demasiado.

RO16´s shield is smaller, but it doesn´t stands too much.

Triari (2x 4Sp) Essex RO4 y RO8

He cambiado la lanza por una aguja.

El estandarte y el comandante son una conversión. Creo que el comandante es RO19, cambiando la cabeza y añadiendo una espada.

Standard bearer and commander are both conversions. I think the commander is RO19, changing the head and adding a sword.

Dos triari y un velite. Creo que la tienda es de Baueda y la empalizada está hecha con palitos de brocheta.

Después de hacer las fotos el esqueleto con yelmo se me ha caído al suelo y se ha partido en cinco partes... He intentado pegar los pies de nuevo pero es imposible, tendré que pensar algo . Quizás hciendo unas grebas con masilla...

My first Wargames Factory skeletons.

Con toda esta fiebre por la mitología griega (Tribes of Legend, Labors of the Gods...) ha sido difícil resistirse. Como no voy a tener tiempo para terminar el ejército de espartanos de Impetus aprovecharé las miniaturas para alguna banda, así que necesitaba algunos "malos" y qué mejor que los esqueletos de "Jasón y los Argonautas".

With all this Greek mythology fever (Tribes of Legend, Labors of the Gods ...), it has been hard to resist. As I will not have time to finish the spartan Impetus army I´ll use the miniatures to create a band, so I need some "bad guys" and what better than the skeletons from the film "Jason and the Argonauts".

Los esqueletos de Wargames Factory tienen un acabado y un detalle increíbles. La parte mala es que son un infierno de montar... Incluso tienes que pegarles los pies! Las partes de que se componen son: cabeza, torso, brazos (armas a parte), piernas/cadera, y pies. Algunas partes son tan finas que se parten con sólo mirarlas... me da miedo siquiera pintarlos, no quiero pensar la tensión al usarlos en una partida!

Wargames Factory skeletons have an incredible detail and high finish. However, assembling is hell... You even have to glue their feet! The parts that are made of are: head, torso, arms (weapons apart), legs/hips, and feet. Some parts are so thin that they break with just looking at them ... I'm afraid to even paint,so I don´t want think the tension when used in a game!

Hace bastante tiempo compré algunos romanos republicanos de pendraken y tras varios años sin pintar mas que algunos vélites los acabé vendiendo porque no me gustaban nada... sobre todo porque los escudos eran ridículamente pequeños y, bueno, porque eran horribles y sin demasiado rigor histórico.

Long time ago I bought some Pendraken´s Republican Romans and, after several years without more than painting some velites, I finally sold them because I realized that I didn´t like them... especially because the shields were ridiculously small and, well, they were horrible and without any historic rigour.

Impetus commanders (10mm)

La primera entrada del año, vamos a empezarlo con buen pie... :-)

Estas son mis dos peanas de comandantes para mi ejército helénico (macedonio de alejandro, seléucida...) de Impetus. La peana de la izquierda es una conversión de Alejandro usando una figura de caballería macedonia como base. Las figuras de la peana de la derecha pertenecen a las tiras de grupo de mando de hoplitas griegos. Todas las figuras son de Old Glory.

These are my two commander bases for my Hellenistic army (Macedonian Alexander's, Seleucid ...) for Impetus. The base of the left is an Alexander conversion using a macedonian cavalry model. The figures on the right base belong to Greek Hoplites command strips. All models are Old Glory.

Afortunadamente todo marcha bien, mi hijo está creciendo muy rápido, nos hemos comprado una casa, seguimos teniendo trabajo... bueno, todo excepto el tiempo para pintar y actualizar el blog, pero prometo publicar alguna foto de vez en cuando para que esto no se muera.

Impetus navalis bases

Bien, las bases definitivas para Impetus Navalis serán éstas. Al final hemos optado por dejar que sean los jugadores quienes eligan el tipo de base que quieren utilizar, siempre que ambos jugadores utilicen las mismas bases. Las reglas serán compatibles con la mayoría de bases existentes, sin embargo la descripción de las reglas estará orientada a uno de estos dos tipos: las peanas rectangulares, que son las más frecuentes, o las peanas con el frente recortado en ángulo de 90º, para favorecer el contacto en la embestida y el cálculo de ángulos.

Well, the final Impetus Navalis bases will be these. In the end we opted to let the players the choice of base type they want to use, as long as both players use the same basis. The rules are compatible with most existing bases, but the description of the rules will be directed to one of these two types: the rectangular base, which is the most frequent, or bases with the front cut at 90 º to encourage ram contacts and angles calculation.

Finally the holidays comence and I hope to resume the blog and the hobby in general, as these last weeks have been a bit crazy...

Mi principal objetivo para este verano es finalizar de una vez por todas el reglamento de Impetus Navalis y poder enviárselo a Lorenzo para que lo pueda publicar. Las reglas están bastante avanzadas, me falta redactar una introducción (escalas, bases, introducción histórica, etc.) y revisar el sistema de puntos y condiciones de victoria. Además, tengo casi otras 20 naves por pintar y elaborar algo de escenografía para poder hacer unas cuantas fotos.

My main goal this summer is to finish once and for all Impetus Navalis rulebook and send it to Lorenzo so he can publish it. Sin embargo, tengo una duda sobre las bases de las naves. Ahora mismo se me plantean dos opciones: peanas rectangulares o peanas que se adapten a la forma del barco:

However, I have a question on the basis of ships. Right now, I have two options: rectangular bases or bases that fit the shape of the boat:

Las fotos 1 y 2 son ejemplos de peana rectangular. La primera nave tiene un espacio en el borde trasero para indicar el nombre de la nave y colocar un dado para controlar el VBU. La segunda nave sería un ejemplo de base rectangular normal.

Ventajas: las peanas rectangulares son fáciles de conseguir y es el tipo de peana que se suele utilizar para barcos.
Desventajas: las esquinas hacen que los contactos en ocasiones queden un poco extraños.

Photos 1 and 2 are examples of rectangular bases. The first ship has a space at the rear edge to indicate the name of the ship and place a die to control the VBU. The second ship is an example of normal rectangular base.
Advantages: the rectangular bases are easy to adquire and is the type of base that is often used for ships.
Disadvantages: sometimes the corners make contacts a little weird.

En las fotos 3, 4 y 5 la peana ha sido recortada para ajustarse a la forma del barco. Personalmente me gusta la opción 3, porque es la que más se ajusta a la forma de la nave. El frontal de la peana, un ángulo de 90º, permite ajustar los contactos e incluso simplificar las reglas para representar diferentes situaciones (embestidas laterales, barridos de remos, etc.). La opción 4 es similar, no me gusta tanto el aspecto como el de la opción 3 pero quizás sea más fácil de fabricar.

Ventajas: mejor aspecto visual de los contactos entre barcos. Reglas más sencillas, en función del contacto.
Desventajas: Peanas difíciles de conseguir (hacerlas a mano) y no muy comunes.

In pictures 3, 4 and 5, the base has been cut to fit the shape of the ship. Personally I like option 3 because it is the one wich most suited to the shape of the ship. The front of the base, an angle of 90 degrees, adjusts the contacts and even simplify the rules to represent different situations (lateral rams, oars raking, etc.). Option 4 is similar, I do not like the appearance as much as the option 3 but may be easier to manufacture.
Advantages: contact between ships looks better. Simpler rules, depending on the contact, not necessary to measure angles.
Disadvantages: Bases hard to get (hand made) and not very common.

Los Borgia me ha gustado mucho más que Los Tudor, pero es que Jeremy Irons hace un papelón. De Juego de Tronos poco puedo decir que no se haya dicho ya, sólo que yo me he leído los libros y la adaptación me está gustando mucho.

Mortal Kombat Legacy ha sido todo un descubrimiento, y me ha sorprendido gratamente, para ser una serie Web. Tenía especialmente ganas de ver el episodio de Scorpion y Sub Zero, y me ha parecido muy interesante....

I liked The Borgias more than The Tudors, but it´s just because Jeremy Irons makes a great job (as always). There´s little I can say about Game of Thrones that has not been said already, just that I've read the books and I'm enjoying much the adaptation.

Mortal Kombat Legacy has been a revelation and it has pleasantly surprised me, being a Web series. I was especially eager to see the episode of Scorpion and Sub Zero, and I've found it very interesting....

New RSBS: HotA gladiator Sheets

He diseñado nuevas fichas para la segunda edición de "Red Sand Blue Sky: Heroes of the Arena", ya que las que hice para la versión anterior ya no sirven.

Podéis ver una ficha en blanco y dos ejemplos de ficha completa (retiarius y secutor). Poco a poco iré haciendo fichas para todos los tipos de gladiadores y animales, pero me vendrían bien vuestros consejos e ideas. ¿Qué opináis, falta o sobra algo?

I´ve designed new sheets for "Red Sand Blue Sky: Heroes of the Arena" second edition rules, as the ones I did for the previous version can´t be used now.

Here you can see a blank sheet and two examples of full record (retiarius and secutor). Little by little, I'll make sheets for all gladiators types and animals, but I could use your advice and ideas. Do you think something is missing or left over?

No estoy muy seguro del resultado final... pero quería terminarlo ya. Lo que menos me convence es el escudo, que lleva escrito el nombre del eques (Habilis), pero no se me ocurrían otros diseños.

Fight for the Pons

He terminado las reglas para el escenario "Lucha por el puente". He jugado unas cuantas partidas y los resultados han sido muy variados así que no creo que haya algún gladiador que salga especialmente favorecido. También he terminado de pintar la plataforma, aunque me he dado cuenta de que me ha quedado un poco pequeña para las bases que yo uso.

I´ve finished the rules for the "Fight for the bridge" scenario. I´ve played a few games and the results have been varied so I don't think there is any gladiator who comes out particularly favored. I've also finished painting the pons, but I have realized that it´s a little small for the bases I use.

Eques, plural Equites

El eques era considerado un gladiador de tipo ligero. Estaba equipado con una manica tradicional (aunque en este modelo de Crusader es de metal) y yelmo cerrado. En las piernas usaba polainas o vendajes. De acuerdo a las numerosas representaciones que nos han llegado, los combates entre equites acababan a pie, donde el eques abandonaba la lanza y combatía con espada y escudo.

The eques was considered a ligth gladiator. He was equipped with a traditional manica (although this Crusader model, has a metal one) and closed helmet. In the legs they wore leggings or bandages. According to the many representations that have survived, fighting between equites ended on foot, where the eques left the spear and fought with sword and shield.

El próximo eques llevará una túnica verde.

I was sef-introduced into this hobby.
The first mini I painted was a bretonian Grail Knight.
I think the best part of this hobby is to seek information and organize a new project (probably this is why I have started too many...).
Lately I'm becoming a painter instead of player...
I found assembling miniatures and making conversions as an absolutely relaxing activity.
I´m married and my wife beat me on a "How freak you are?" test.
Almost 2 months ago I had a son. He´s the best thing I´ve done and I´m very proud of him. Hope I could share this hobby with him in a future :)

Si estaban incluidos en el progama, una pareja de equites montados en caballos blancos iniciaban los combates de gladiadores. Vestían amplias túnicas de colores y portaban llamativos escudos para ser fácilmente reconocidos por el público. Tras unos cuantos lances, lo más frecuente es que el combate continuase a pie.

If they were included in the program, a couple of equites, riding white horses, opened the gladiator combats. They wore large colored robes and carry striking shields to be easily recognized by the public. After a few attacks, the battle usually continued on foot.

Este eques lleva dibujado en su escudo el número de combates en los que ha salido victorioso.

Conversions: murmillo & arbelas

Simplemente le he añadido una manica más grande y una capa. También he cambiado el escudo rectangular por uno ovalado.

Pons & Pontarii

He estado pensando en un escenario especial para RSBS: lucha por la plataforma. Así que he construido la parte fundamental para este escenario, la plataforma (o pons).

I've been thinking about a special scenario for RSBS: fight for the platform. So I´ve built the key of this scenario, the platform (or pons).

Los gladiadores que participaban en este particular combate recibían el nombre de pontiarii. Lo habitual es que un retiarius se enfrentara a dos secutores desde lo alto de la plataforma. Para compensar la inferioridad numérica el retiarius podía arrojarles piedras.

The gladiators who participated in this particular battle were called pontiarii. Typically, a retiarius faced two secutores from the top of the platform. To compensate the inferiority, the retiario could throw them stones.

Aunque ya tengo pintado un retiarius y dos secutores he pensado usar otras figuras que encajen mejor en la plataforma. He hecho una converión de secutor usando el cuerpo de un murmillo y el casco de un arbelas. Da la impresión de estar cargando cuesta arriba, protegiéndose de las piedras del retiarius.

Although I already have a painted retiarius and two secutores, I plan to use other figures that fit better on the platform. I made a secutor conversion using the body of a murmillo and the helmet of an arbelas. He looks like he´s charging up the platform, while protecting from the stones of retiarius.

Un par de conversiones de venatores equipados al estilo del siglo I que estoy haciendo, basándome en la ilustración de Vladimir Golubev y usando figuras de Foundry.

Ha pasado un mes y medio desde que pinté mi última miniatura pero, por fin, se vuelve a ver algo de progreso en este blog... ;)

Como el primer secutor lo pinté con tonos negros, en este he usado más el blanco. La miniatura es del blister ANG002 - Secutores & Scissor (Crusader Miniatures), pero he hecho un sencillo intercambio de cabezas.

Cursed miniature

Gracias a todos los que aportásteis algún consejo para arreglar el problema de la imprimación, al final usé acetona y ha quedado bastante bien... el problema es que ahora se me han roto las patas del caballo! :(

Estoy dedicando mi escaso tiempo a arreglar esta miniatura, cuando debería estar pintando. Voy a intentar taladrar las patas y poner un alambre, pero creo que van a ser demasiado finas...

Una vez más, ¿Algún consejo o idea?

Thanks to all who give some tips to fix the problem of the primer, in the end I used acetone and the result has been pretty good... now the problem is that I have broken the horse's legs! :(

I´m dedicating my little time to fix this miniature, instead of painting. I'll try to drill the legs and put a wire, but I think they will be too thin ...

Once again, any tips or ideas?

Recently I´ve assemled and primed Crusader´s equites figures and I must say they are awesome! I´m willing to have time to paint them...

Sin embargo, el spray de imprimación ha fallado y las figuras de los equites montados han quedado con una textura rugosa que no me gusta nada...

Este es el segundo secutor de Crusader que pinto y he decidido reemplazar el yelmo de la figura original, así mis dos secutores llevarán el mismo tipo de casco.

Algunas conversiones de espectadores para el anfiteatro. Son piezas de hoplitas de Inmortal y numidas (la mayoría) de Wargames Factory. He hecho unas pequeñas conversiones con masilla Feroca, pero el problema es que hay muy pocos modelos de cabezas. Las dos figuras de metal son espectadores de Crusader.

Some spectators conversions for the amphitheatre. I´ve used Inmortal hoplites and Wargames Factory (most of them) components. I´ve made some small conversions using Feroca putty, but the lack of head types it´s a problem. The two metal models are Crusader´s spectators.

No se dispone de mucha información sobre este gladiador. Lo más probable es que estuviese equipado de forma muy similar al retiarius y que usase las mismas técnicas de combate. Las armas eran parecidas pero no iguales: una lanza en lugar del tridente y un lazo (laqueus) en lugar de la red.

Not too much information available about this gladiator. Probably they were equipped much like the retiarii and used the same combat techniques. The weapons were similar but not identical: a spear instead of the trident, and a noose (laqueus) instead of the net.

Debo decir que no esperaba mucho más que pasar un rato entretenido, pero me ha sorprendido muy gratamente! Grabada a modo de documental (cámara en movimiento, como en Cloverfield), un grupo de jóvenes sigue de cerca a un cazador de trolls en Noruega. Una película muy original y entretenida. Os la recomiendo.

I must say that I was not expecting much more than spend some entertaining time, but I was very pleasantly surprised! Recorded as a documentary (moving camera, as in Cloverfield), a youth group closely follows a troll hunter in Norway. A very original and entertaining film. I recommend it.

Crusader miniatures (ANG003 - Retiarii & Laqueaius)

Los retiarii aparecieron por primera vez en el siglo I. y su armamento, un tridente (fuscina) y una red (rete), recordaban a un pescador. También portaba una pequeña daga (pugio) que podía usar como último recurso. Su principal oponente era el secutor, aunque también podía enfrentarse al murmillo.

The retiarii appeared for first time on the 1st century AD and their weapons, a trident (fuscina) and a net (rete), remembered a fisherman. They also had a small dagger (pugio) that could be used as a last chance. His opponent was the secutor, although he could also be matched with a murmillo.

El retiarius era el gladiador más ligero. Apenas tenía armadura, el cinturón (balteus) y la manica en el brazo izquierdo eran su única protección, junto a la gran hombrera (galerus) que podía proteger parte de la cabeza, ya que no usaban yelmo como el resto de gladiadores.

The retiarius was the lightest gladiator. He just had armour, a belt (balteus) and a manica on his left arm was his only protection, along with the large shoulder pad (galerus) that could protect part of the head, cause he didn´t wear a helmet as the rest of gladiators.

Secutor

También conocido como contraretiarius, ya que su principal oponente era el retiarius, el secutos (pl. secutores) posee un yelmo muy distintivo. Sólo tenía un par de agugeros pequeños para los ojos, con el objetivo de prevenir que el tridente del retiario pudierale clavársele en la cara, y una cresta redondeada donde no podía engancharse la red.

El secutor iba equipado con un cinturón ancho (como muchos otros gladiadores) y una manica en el brazo derecho (el brazo de la espada). También portaba una ocrea en su pierna izquierda y un scutum grande.

La miniatura es del blister ANG002 - Secutores & Scissor (Crusader Miniatures).

Also known as contraretiarius, as his usual opponent was the retiarius, the secutor (pl. secutores) has a very distinctive helmet. It had only two small eye-holes, in order to prevent a retiarius's trident from being thrust through the face, as well as a rounded top, so as not to get caught in a net.

The secutor wore a wide belt (as many other gladiators) and a manica on his right arm (sword arm). He also wore a small ocrea on his left leg and a large scutum.

Editor´s Box (amphitheatre WIP - 7)

Me parecía que el palco del editor era demasiado simple, así que antes de pintarlo he decidido hacer unas pequeñas modificaciones.

I thought that the editor´s box was too simple, so, before I paint it, I´ve decided to make some little changes.

Lo primero, el suelo. Usando cartón pluma y una regla he creado este suelo que parece un mosaico.

First of all, the floor. Using foam board and a metric rule I´ve created this "mosaic" floor.

En esta foto se aprecia cómo queda el suelo. Las dos figuras, Anibal y Escipion, servirán de editor y estatua, respectivamente. La pared del fondo la he cubierto con láminas de madera. La estatua irá en el centro y a ambos lados unas cortinas. La parte dibujada en rojo será recortada y colocaré una pequeña puerta de madera. Este acceso improvisado (se me había olvidado poner uno!) me da la excusa para pintar un legionario y usarlo como guardaespaldas.

This picture shows how the floor finally looks. The two figures, Hannibal and Scipio, will serve as editor and statue respectively. I have covered the back wall with sheets of wood. The statue will be in the middle and curtains on either side. The part drawn in red will be cut and I´ll make a small wooden door. This improvised access (I forgot to put one!) gives me an excuse to paint a legionary and use it as bodyguard.

Y este es el aspecto que tiene ahora mismo el anfiteatro. Los toldos no están puestos y falta hacer la puertecita de acceso al palco. El blanco no es el color definitivo, es que le he dado una capita con aguaplas para que tenga textura. Si os fijáis he añadido una madera atravesada encima de la puerta de entrada a la arena. Además de que queda mejor, ahora las puertas pueden abrirse! :-)))

And this is the way the amphitheater it looks now. The awnings are not set and I stilla have to make the little door to access the box. The white color is not definitive, I've just give a white putty brush to give some texture. As you can see, I´ve also added a wood beam above the entrance to the arena. Besides that it looks better, now the doors can be opened! :-)))

Secunda Rudis

El secunda rudis es el segundo árbitro (o asistente del summa rudis) que supervisa el combate entre los gladiadores.

La miniatura pertenece al blister ANG007 - Arena Officials (Crusader Miniatures).

No sé muy bien por qué pero el barniz mate ha quedado demasiado brillante en esta figura... Tendré que arreglarlo más adelante.

Foundry.
Tiene bastante variedad, no sólo civiles "nobles" sino también civiles armados que son fácilmente modificables en espectadores (incluso puedo aprovechar alguno como venator). También tienen figuras que puedo usar para el palco del editor (aunque me sobrase alguna).

Inconveniente: Las minis de Foundry son carísimas... (2,50€ cada una)

It has a lot of variety, not only roman nobles, but also armed civilians than can be easily converted into spectators (I can even use some of them as venators). They also have some figures I can use for the editor´s box.

Tiene mucha más variedad que Foundry, incluyendo un editor con heraldos. Lo malo es que hay que comprarlo online. Aún así, 21 figuras (incluyendo editor y heraldos) salen por 31,72€. Más o menos 1,51€ cada miniatura.

Lo malo (y es muy malo) es que son a escala 25mm. Es posible que no queden mal, al estar más elevados que los gladiadores, pero no sé si merece la pena arriesgarse...

He has much variety than Foundry, including an editor with heralds. I´ll have to pay postage but, even with this extra, 21 figures (inclusing editor and heralds) will cost less than 32€ (1,5€ each figure).

The inconvenience (and it is a serious one) is that the figures scale is 25mm. Probably they will not look too bad, as they are higher than gladiators, but i´m not sure to take the risk.

Crusader.
Es la última opción. Son de la misma marca que los gladiadores que estoy usando, así que encajan perfectamente. Además, cada figura saldría a 1,65€. Para ser 28mm son bastante más baratos que Foundry, y sólo un poco más caros que los de Steve Barber.

Problema: tienen pocas opciones, sólo cuatro civiles, y tendría que convertir algunas figuras para dar variedad (por ejemplo las de milicia). Y no habría mujeres espectadoras.

Al contrario de lo que se pueda pensar, los combates entre gladiadores estaban sujetos a ciertas reglas y por su cumplimiento velaban un par de jueces: un árbitro (summa rudis) y su asistente (secunda rudis).

Esta miniatura probablemente debería contar como escenografía, ya que no hay reglas para los árbitros en Red San Blue Sky. Sin embargo las figuras de árbitros de Crusader me gustaron mucho y creo que pueden quedar muy bien en las fotos de las partidas.

La miniatura pertenece al blister ANG007 - Arena Officials (Crusader Miniatures).

Contrary to what one might think, the fighting between gladiators were subject to certain rules, and their enforcement was supervised by a couple of judges: a referee (summa rudis) and his assistant (secunda rudis).

This miniature should probably be classified as scenery, as there are no rules for referee in Red Sand Blue Sky. However, Crusader´s referee figures are very nice and I think they can look great in the games pictures.

The model belongs to the blister ANG007 - Arena Officials (Crusader Miniatures).

El Arbelas (también conocido como Scissor) es uno de los tipos de gladiadores mejor protegidos para poder compensar la ausencia de escudo. Su oponente habitual es otro Arbelas o un Retiarius, de manera que su yelmo es bastante similar al de los Secutores (para evitar que se enganche la red). Se les reconoce fácilmente por el arma poco usual que portan en la mano izquierda, una pieza de armadura que cubre el antebrazo y acaba en una cuchilla con forma de luna creciente.

La miniatura es del blister ANG002 - Secutores & Scissor (Crusader Miniatures).

Estoy contento con el resultado. Una miniatura muy sencilla de pintar (poca carne), a la que he conseguido darle el tono oscuro que quería. La verdad es que impone... :-)

The Arbelas (also known as Scissor) is one of the gladiator types with best protection, in order to compensate the absence of shield. His opponent is another Arbelas or a Retiarius, so his helmet is quite similar to Secutor´s (to avoid snagging the net). They are easily recognized because of the unusual weapon they carried in their left hand, a piece of armor that covers the forearm and ends in a blade crescent-shaped.

The model is ANG002 - Secutores & Scissor (Crusader Miniatures).

I'm happy with the result. A simple miniature painting (not many flesh), which I managed to give the dark look I wanted. The truth is he commands respect... :-)

Crearemos el río una vez el resto de la peana esté terminada. Ya que el efecto agua es transparente conviene dar algo de detalle al lecho del río, o quedará demasiado soso. Para el efecto agua he utilizado este producto:

We will create the river once the rest of the base is completed. Since water effect is transparent, you should give some detail to the river bed, or it will look too simple.

No es líquido, así que puede moldearse ligeramente con un pincel húmedo para dar cierta textura a la superficie.

Al secarse (unas 24h) queda transparente. Sin embargo, si hacemos una capa muy gruesa tardará bastante más. Lo mejor es hacer varias capas: extender una capa y esperar a que seque, extender otra y esperar a que seque. Además, como encoge una vez seco, es preferible hacer dos o tres capas para conseguir un volumen adecuado.

It´s not liquid, so it can be molded lightly with a wet brush to give some texture to the surface.

Once dry (about 24h) is transparent. However, if we make a very thick coat will take a lot more time to dry. He tardado un poco en terminarla, la culpa es de las distracciones...

Bueno, he aquí la última unidad de caballería para los Diablos Rojos. En esta ocasión, la peana puede representar una unidad de CP con comandante, ya que incluye a Kimata Morikatsu.

Well, here's the last cavalry unit for the Red Devils. On this occasion, the base can be used as a CP unit with commander, as it includes Kimata Morikatsu.

Ya está pintada la arena! El resultado con la masailla es bastante bueno, aunque seguramente le dé un retoque al elevador, que no me acaba de convencer cómo ha quedado...

He tenido que repetir la arena del anfiteatro... Había usado demasiada masilla y al secarse la madera (DM de 3mm) se ha combado (y se me ha roto al intentar arreglarlo). En el "remake" he usado una tabla de 4mm de grosor y he usado muy poca masilla. Esta vez todo ha salido bien y ya puedo ponerme a pintar!

I´ve had to repeat the arena for the amphitheater ... Had used too much putty and the wood (3mm MDF) has warped once dried (and I have broken it while trying to fix it). In the "remake" I´ve used a 4mm table and very little putty. This time everything went well and I can start to paint!

El primer paso para construir un anfiteatro para los gladiadores está completado. Empieza la segunda fase: pintado.

The first step of creating an amphiteatre for my gladiators is complete. The second step commence: painting.

La arena está hecha sobre una base ovalada de DM (3mm) cubierta con una pasta rugosa (vandal). También he puesto un elevador, para que no sea muy monótona.

The arena is made of a MDF (3mm) ovalshape base covered with a rough putty. There is also one elevator, so the arena is not so tedious.

La fase tres, las gradas, será más complicada... Pero de momento, a pintar la arena!

El equipo del thraex es parecido al del hoplomachus, pero su arma es una espada curva (sica) y el escudo pequeño es cuadrado (parmula).

Su oponente es el myrmillo, pero en ocasiones se puede enfrentar a hoplomachus.

The thraex equipment is most like hoplomachus, but his weapon is a curved sword (sica) and his small shield is square (parmula).

Primera miniatura de mi nuevo proyecto, un Hoplomachus!

Este gladiador estaba armado un ona lanza y una daga larga que sujetaba con la mano del escudo. Portaba un pequeño escudo y su cabeza estaba completamente cubierta por un yelmo. Como su escudo era pequeño, las piernas estaban muy protegidas con altas espinilleras de metal (ocreae).

Su oponente habitual era el Myrmillo, pero también podía enfrentarse en raras ocasiones al Thraex.

La miniatura es del blister ANG004 - Thraeces & Hoplomachii (Crusader Miniatures).

Me ha resultado muy fácil y entretenido pintar esta miniatura. Los detalles están mucho mejor marcados que en las de Foundry (mi otra opción. Estoy muy contento de haber escogido esta marca para mis gladiadores!

Sólo decir que he usado color Latón en lugar de Bronce... Me gusta más como queda :-)

This gladiator was armed with a long spear and a long dagger that he carried in his shield hand. He carried a small round shield and his head was entirely enclosed in a helmet. As he carried a small shield, his legs were highly protected with tall metal ocreae.

His usual opponent was the Myrmillo, but he can also face a Thraex on rare ocasions.

This miniature is from de blister ANG004 - Thraeces & Hoplomachii (Crusader Miniatures).

I´ve find it very easy (and nice) to paint, much more than Foundry ones (my other option). I´m very happy to have choosen Crusader gladiators!

Just to say that I´ve used Brass color instead of Bronze... I think it look better :-)

A couple of conversions I´ve done while the water effect dries...

La primera consiste en transformar un portaestandarte (que no necesitaba) en un samurái normal. Seguro que les gusta a Rokurota y a El Soldado Tranquilo... ;)

La segunda es una conversión muy simple de o uma-jirushi que usaré con mi segunda unidad de caballería.

No tiene demasiado trabajo, ya que estará flotando en el río... :)
El color azul del sashimono (elegido aleatoriamente) contrastará con el rojo de la caballería.

Con esta figura tengo todo lo que necesito para empezar la base de la primera unidad. Tan sólo me queda pintar los mon de los sashimonos.

Don´t have too much work, since it will be floating in the river... :)
The blue color of the sashimono (chosen randomly) will contrast with the red ones of the cavalry.

With this figure I have all I need to start the base for the first cavalry unit. I just have to paint the mon on the sashimonos.

Finalmente he podido sacar un ratito y escribir el informe de batalla de Impetus Navalis sobre la partida que jugamos la semana pasada. Aquí lo tenéis.

Finally I could get some time to write an AAR for the Impetus Navalis game we played last week. Here it is.

Despliegue / Deployment

El bando romano (comandado por Eladio) dispone de dos escuadrones.

Escuadrón A: Hexere (Tauropole) y dos pentere (Thera y Kentaura).
Escuadrón B: Dos hemiolas (Kastor y Polux).

El bando pirata (a mis órdenes) también dispone de dos escuadrones.

Escuadrón A: Un triere selecto (Salaminia) y tres rápidos (Aura, Kallisto y Herakles).
Escuadrón B: Tres bierei (Lykaina, Dorkas y Leaina).

Roman fleet (commanded by Eladio) have two squadrons.

A squadron: Hexere (Tauropole) and two pentere (Thera y Kentaura).
B squadron: Two hemiola (Kastor and Polux).

Pirate fleet (at my command) also have two squadrons:

En el primer turno no ocurrió nada relevante, simplemente ambos bandos realizaron sus maniobras. Las naves pequeñas pueden explorar y desplegar 20cm más adelantadas que el resto de naves, pero sólo los piratas decidieron usar esta regla.

In the first turn didn´t occur nothing relevant, both sides just made their moves. Small ships can explore and deploy 20cm closer than the other ships, but only the pirates decided to use this rule.

Los remeros de la Kastor quedaron exhaustos tras mover a velocidad 3. No tuvo un gran efecto en la batalla... pero es la primera vez que uso los marcadores de estado en una partida :-)

Kastor´s rowers were exhausted after moving at speed 3. It did not have a big effect on the battle ... but it is the first time using status markers in a game :-)

TURNO 2
La Lykaina se arriesgó con una embestida frontal sobre Polux. El resultado fue una colisión que dejó trabadas a ambas naves sin poder abordarse.

Lykaina dared with a frontal ram on Pollux. The result was a collision that left both ships locked without any chance of boarding.

El capitán de la Leaina fue más intrépido y realizó un barrido de remos sobre la Kastor, hiriendo a multitud de remeros.

Leaina´s captain was more intrepid and make an oars rake on Kastor, wounding many rowers.

Sin embargo, al otro lado esperaba la Tauropole, que abrió fuego con toda su artillería. No causó demasiadas bajas, pero provocó confusión en cubierta.

However, on the other side Tauropole was waiting, and opened fire with all her artillery. It didn´t caused many casualties, but confusion on deck.

Viendo una oportunidad, la Dorkas embistió a la Kastor lateralmente, hundiéndola de forma definitiva. Sin embargo, su flanco quedó también expuesto a la Tauropole...

Taking the opportunity, Dorkas rammed Kastor to the side, getting to sink it definitively . However, his side was also exposed to Tauropole...

... y la embestida de un hexere fue demasiado para la pequeña biere.

La Kentaura se aproximó a la Leaina y consiguió engancharla para abordar. Sin embargo, los tripulantes de la biere se defendieron bien y el abordaje quedó en tablas.

Kentaura approached Leaina and grappled it to conduct a boarding. However, the crew of the biere defended well and boarding was a draw.

TURNO 3
Las triereis avanzaron para flanquear a las pesadas naves romanas. Era su única opción ya que una embestida frontal o un abordaje sería un suicidio. La situación de las bieres no era buena. La Lykaina seguía enganchada con la Polux, y la tripulación de la Leaina resistía a duras penas el abordaje de la Kentaura.

The triereis moved to flank the heavy Roman ships. It was their only option, as a boarding or a frontal ram would be suicide. The situation of the biereis wasn´t good. Lykaina was still locked with Polux, and the crew of the Leaina barely resisted the boarding of Kentaura.

Las naves romanas abrieron fuego sobre las triereis con sus proyectiles incendiarios, y la Tauropole logró prender fuego a la Aura!

The Roman ships opened fire on triereis with incendiary projectiles, and Tauropole managed to set fire to the Aura!

La batalla pintaba mal para los piratas, y sólo si consiguen hundir alguna nave pesada con una embestida en el siguiente turno podrán cambiar las tornas.

The battle looks bad for the pirates, and only if they manage to sink a heavy ship with a ram in the next turn could change the tide of the battle.

TURNO 4
El turno no comienza bien para los piratas... La Leaina sucumbe al abordaje de la Kentaura, aunque era algo que ya se esperaba, y es capturada. Cerca de allí, la hemiola romana logra destrabarse e intenta huir, pero la Lykaina la alcanza y la embiste lateralmente. La tirada del la embestida no puede ser mas alta (doble 6) y la Polux se hunde. Sin embargo, obtener un doble quiere decir que las naves quedan enganchadas, y la Lykaina se hunde junto con su presa.

The turn doesn´t start well for the pirates ... Leaina succumbs to Kentaura boarding, though it was something that was expected, and was captured. Nearby, the Roman hemiola achieves to unlock and tries to escape, but Lykaina reaches her and rams to the side. The raming roll can not be higher (double 6) and Pollux sinks. However, getting a double means that the ships are locked, and Lykaina sinks along with her prey.

La extremadamente rápida y maniobrable Salaminia consigue embestir la popa de la Thera, pero la pentere romana está bien reforzada y sólo queda dañada. La tripulación de la triere consigue eludir el abordaje.

The extremely fast and maneuverable Salaminia gets to ram the stern of the Thera, but the Roman pentere is well reinforced and is only damaged. The crew of the triere manages to avoid the boarding rejecting Kentaura´s hooks.

La Kallisto embiste a la Tauropole pero consigue el mismo resultado, sólamente dañada. Para empeorar las cosas la hexere consigue engancharla. La tripulación de la triere apenas resiste la primera ronda de abordaje contra la muy superior hexere.

Kallisto rams Tauropole but gets the same result, just damaged. To make matters worse the hexere gets the grapple it. The crew of the triere barely resists the first boarding round against the far superior hexere.

Para complicar aún más el asunto, la nave incendiada (Aura) choca con la Kallisto. El choque no provoca daños y el fuego no se extiende... afortunadamente. El último triere, la Herakles, intenta un desesperado ataque frontal, pero lo único que logra es dañarse a sí mismo.

To complicate matters further, the burning vessel (Aura) clashes with Kallisto. The shock causes no damage and the fire does not extend... fortunately. The last triere, the Herakles, try a desperate frontal attack, but all it accomplishes is damaging herself.

La Tauropole logra enganchar a la Herakles y como resultado de una nueva fase de abordaje, y a pesar de repartr los dados entre dos enemigos, los romanos logran capturar la Kallisto, pero esta vez deciden hundir la nave.

Tauropole grapple Herakles and as a result of a new boarding phase, despite sharing out the dice between two enemies, the romans capture Kallisto, but this time they decided to sink the ship.

La batalla está perdida para los piratas. Han perdido cuatro naves y sólo han conseguido hundir dos naves romanas de exploración. Al finalizar el turno 4 las tres triereis que quedan emprenden la huida. Para los romanos ha sido una gran victoria, pues han perdido dos hemiola pero han capturado un biere. Pasará un tiempo hasta que vuelvan a saber de los piratas!

The battle is lost for the pirates. They have lost four ships and have only managed to sink two roman exploration vessels. At the end of turn 4, the three remaining triereis flee. For the Romans it was a great victory, as they have lost just two hemiola, but captured a biere. Will be a while until they hear from the pirates again!

Bueno, primer informe de batalla con las (casi) definitivas reglas para Impetus Navalis. Tanto Eladio como yo creemos que han funcionado muy bien y que es sólo cuestión de pulir algunos detalles. Espero terminar dentro de poco el documento del Basic Impetus Navalis y subirlo al foro de Impetus para que más gente pueda probarlo. Hasta entonces, espero que os haya picado la curiosidad... ;-)

Well, first battle report with the (almost) definitive rules for Impetus Navalis. Both Eladio and I believe that they have worked very well and is just a matter of polishing some details. Soon I hope to finish the document for Basic Impetus Navalis rules and upload it to Impetus forum so more people can test them. Until then, I hope I have piqued your curiosity ... ;-)

Como me encanta cambiar de planes he decidido pintar las tropas montadas que me quedan (tres samuráis y dos tsukaiban). Al final tendré un total de tres unidades de caballería.
